Makar Vitkovsky

Atypical autism

Description

History and appeal from the words of the mother:

“He can name fruits and vegetables in several languages and knows more about transportation than many adults. But sometimes he has a hard time understanding even things that seem simple to us: what’s safe right now, where we’re going, and why we can’t do everything exactly the way he wants.”

I gave birth to Makar at 34 weeks of pregnancy. From the very beginning, his journey has been more challenging than that of most children. He has now been diagnosed with atypical autism with cognitive impairment, moderate intellectual disability, hyperkinetic behavioral disorder, and systemic speech underdevelopment of grades 1–2.

Behind these complex terms is my son—a curious, enthusiastic, and very special boy.

Makar easily memorizes foreign words. He knows many fruits and vegetables—he can recognize them and name them. His special passions are trains and public transportation. He can watch trains, routes, and vehicles with great interest. And when he’s in a good mood, he happily helps me in the kitchen.

But at the same time, his world is very complicated. Makar has poor body awareness and is not good at sensing danger. He may not realize that a situation is dangerous, so he needs constant adult supervision.

It’s extremely difficult for him to adapt to changes in his routine. A new route, an unfamiliar place, a change in plans, or an unexpected situation can trigger severe anxiety and a behavioral crisis. The hardest moments for us are when things don’t go the way Makar wants them to.

He might scream, hit me, bite himself, or try to get what he wants by any means necessary. At times like these, he loses control of his behavior, and it becomes dangerous for both him and me.

I don’t want his future to depend on how well he can get his way by force.

I want to teach him a different way.

To ask using words or in a way that works for him.
To wait.
To cope with rejection.
To respond safely to change.
To better understand his own body and the world around him.
To interact with other people and gradually become more independent in everyday life.

To achieve this, Makar needs regular sessions with a psychologist, a behavioral therapist, and a speech therapist. This isn’t a one-time solution. Systematic, ongoing rehabilitation is crucial for him, because it’s precisely through regular work that he can gradually reinforce new skills and apply them from therapy sessions to everyday life.

I am his mom and, in fact, the only person who is always by his side. I do everything I can, but it’s very difficult for me to provide the necessary amount of rehabilitation on my own.

That’s why I’m reaching out for help. I’m not asking for Makar to be “just like everyone else.” I’m asking for help so he can learn to live in his own world more safely, more peacefully, and more independently.

Because behind the diagnoses is a boy who loves trains, is fascinated by vehicles, knows his fruits and vegetables, is interested in languages, and loves to help his mom. And I really want him to one day be able to use his abilities not only by my side, but also in a more independent life.

Please help Makar continue his rehabilitation. Your support is not just about paying for his sessions. It’s an opportunity for him to learn skills that come naturally to other children but require daily effort for Makar.

Helping Makar means giving him greater security, independence, and opportunities for the future.

If you can support Makar—even a small contribution will help pay for his classes and bring him closer to a more independent life.”

A fundraiser is currently underway to support social and daily-life rehabilitation at the “World of Opportunities” Inclusive Center, with a total goal of 30,000 UAH.
